An interview I recently did which you can read right here has triggered a quest.
The quest is to find the name of an MS-DOS game I used to play. Here’s everything I know about the game:
- It’s a sci-fi/futuristic 2D scrolling shooter
- It scrolls vertically, not horizontally
- The ship was red. When you won, the screen just said “SUCCESS” in big letters
- I think the only controls were the directional keys to navigate, and the space bar to fire
- You could collect bonuses by flying over them
The other games I was playing at the time (Nibbles, Rescue Rover and Gorillas) were all released in 1991, so it should be from around the same era. Here’s a great picture of Gorillas, just ‘cos it’s fantastic.
Here’s a list of suggested games it is not, which I will keep updating. Help me in my quest!
It isn’t:
Axelay, Raiden, R-Type, Tyria, Xenon

Nibbles and Gorillas were Microsoft Qbasic games, =), demonstrating coding games in BASIC.
I never played a vertical shooter on PC though, I’m afraid, =P, so sorry…
