I’ve been ill last night and this morning. I’ve stayed in the house working pretty slowly on Penrith castle (and also watching the news with horror). Here are the results so far. That’s it sitting next to the ugly old one. The other decision was to go forward with round towers, rather than square ones … Continue reading
Today I went back to Penrith to see the castle. It was a bit of a shock to go back really, as it’s put into clear perspective the number of aspects with the model that I originally got wrong. It’s mainly to do with size and scale, the texture of the stone used throughout needs … Continue reading
Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who has read this blog, it does lift me to see people clicking around and checking out the images. All in all, I have to admit I had a grander vision of the finished product, I just wanted it to look more realistic for my dissertation hand in. … Continue reading
I’m going to colour these in with Photoshop, to illustrate the name and function of each room: The interior layout is very basic, and there’s plenty missing (such as the gatehouse interior).
After studying gatehouses in a little more detail, I’ve added some additional geometry to the gatehouse version with extra angles, my primary reasoning being Penrith’s recorded struggles against Scottish invasion – a wider view point from the gatehouse makes great sense in Penrith’s scenario.
Currently trying to decide between two styles of gatehouse for the front of the castle. The rest of Penrith’s architecture, and the remains of the outlines on the ground plan all indicate the gatehouse would be square, as above. However, when I’m looking at castle gatehouses that are still complete, they tend to either have … Continue reading
I’m starting to realise I’ve barely taken advantage of the freedom of high-poly modelling, after applying a slate texture to the top of Strickland’s tower – which at the moment just looks far too basic. I’m now modelling and texturing roof slates separately, these models can then be duplicated and placed over all the buildings, … Continue reading
In a similar light to Brougham Hall, while looking for resource images I came across Lowther Castle. Although the castle is much younger than Penrith (it was built in the 18th Century), I am fascinated by how pristine the shell of the castle is. The interior has vanished but the exterior looks immaculate from above. … Continue reading
Another quick entry today, my computer is becoming gradually less reliable so I don’t have a texture test for the walls yet, instead I’ve been making some changes to the geometry (the new PC was supposed to arrive on Thursday so I’m having to make do). Also hoping to size up items like the slit … Continue reading
Been making some tweaks to the detail after a few mistakes accidentally deleting some parts without realising, also had some more crashes as I was hoping to do a texture test so unfortunately I can’t show that yet. By shrinking the supports and having an accurate number around the edge, (they’ve doubled since the last … Continue reading
